Great book

Amazing read for the sci-fi folk, keeps you well entertained and always lusting for more and more pages. Worth my money.

Enchanting, Confusing, Addicting, Beautiful

I am both in love and completely over the book at the same time. Talk about confusing. Snow Crash reads like watching The Matrix for the first time-- it's mind blowing, action-packed, brilliant, and annoying all at the same time. That said, I couldn't put it down. Stephenson rebooted the cyberpunk genre with this novel, and for good reason. But it runs you over a bit like a steamroller. So, instead I am giving you a loves/hates list-- it's all my brain can handle:

Loves:
• Hiro Protagonist
• The Librarian
• The Metaverse
• Fido
• Pizza Delivery
• Futuristic Punk Rock
• Futuristic skateboards
• Brilliant aggressive rape-protectant

Hates:
• YT
• Uncle Enzo
• The "real world" and their franchised spaces
• L Bob Rife and that whole religion thing
• Metaphysical, philosophical, political, and tech-related diatribes
• ANYTIME Sumer/Enki was mentioned. Kill me. Kill me now.

In the end, I think the best way to describe this novel is as a train wreck. A beautiful, beautiful train wreck. It's a chaotic blend of great and terrible, beautiful and ugly, clean and messy. But I couldn't look away. And even now that it's done, I know I'll never read it again… but I REALLY want to. Drat. I might be addicted.

25

Hard to believe that this is 25 years old. Not sure why it's taken me 25 years to get around to reading it. Yes, much of it is absurd, but I found it very enjoyable.

Decent

Not my favorite Stephenson novel, but still learned something about history. Fun vision of corporate America taking over all aspects of functioning government.

I was amazed that the book was written in the early 90s

When I read Snow Crash, I was amazed that the book was written in the early 90s. It accurately describes many of the technologies we now not only have, but have access to every day. For this alone, it is worth a read. Stephenson predicted a lot of what we now take for granted in day to day life and it is really kind of awesome.

From a prose stand point, this is not the easiest book to read. There is plenty of tech jargon (some of it made up) and a lot of linguistics vocabulary you might need to parse as you are reading. Also, his description of the corporate states is a little head scratching at first, but I feel pretty confident in saying that if you ignore it early on, you'll get it by the end.

Otherwise, it is an entertaining yarn. I didn't like it as much the 2nd time I read it, but I still think it is a very good book.

Not so good

Not well written. Storyline was hard to follow. Characters did not flow together and work well with the storyline. Bad.

Just doesn't stand the test of time. Technical material is out-dated and the plot is nonsensical at best. I enjoyed Cryptonomicon and wanted more of Stephenson but will be giving him a long, if not permanent break.

A great read if you are looking for a dystopian future with some excellent world building

Fantastic dystopian future world full with interesting and harsh extrapolations of today society and some cool creative interpretation of early religion. This book has a lot going for it! It falls on star short because by the end of the book I couldn't care less about what happened to the "Hiro" and actually was more concerned with the couple supporting characters that weren't a one dimensional stereotype. This book is a fun romp that striving to make some interesting observations on the vim diagram of society/religion/computers but is as clumsy at it as a 15 year-old boy in a darkened girls bedroom

A must read.

This is a fantastic book. Just so much fun. The first chapter put me off but after the first fifth of the book I was hooked. It has two slow parts but otherwise the pace is really good, and fun

Great characters, unresolved ending

So much great stuff in this book. I loved the protagonists and the premise. What I really disliked was the ending. It felt like an abrupt jolt and was not satisfying. Did he just have to hit a deadline? Would rate it a 3.5

Hilarious, Visionary, Cyberpunk Masterpiece

Deeply interesting characters, a driving story, and a premise that still feels fresh despite its age. For me, this is a top 10 sci fi of all time.

The beginning is a bit choppy, but it's worth your patience. What I loved about this book was that there was all the education in Sumerian language/society that's woven quite well into the rest of the story.

An Early Work?

Snow Crash is a Frankenstein monster, a hybrid of a techno-thriller-action movie and a neuro-linguistic-philosophical lecture. The combination is not well mixed. But both parts are fascinating, and they would die without each other. Apparently this is where “avatar” and “metaverse” were born. Stephenson’s characters are memorable, especially the Deliverator and his race to get his pizza to the customer before the deadline. I’m glad I read this one, and will try another one asap.

20-Year old high-tech adventure is still fresh!

An old high-tech adventure involving smart-wheel skateboards and motorcycles, with Balkanized "burbclaves" is still a really fun read, and was even worth the re-read. Highly recommended.
