| 元フェイスブックがメタに社名変更したその名前の元ネタとなったSF小説 メタバースはバーチャルリアリティと同義語であるが、仮想空間の複雑さや規模を表現するために作られた造語である メタバースの語源は一般的にmeta(超越した) + verse(宇宙)と考えられがちだが小説を読むとmetaではなくmetaphor(メタファー・隠喩)のメタだということがわかる 現実世界の自分と仮想空間のアバターへの投影に始まり、物語の根幹であるウイルスや宗教・言語・ソフトウェア・文明・ミームといった全てが本質的には同じであるというメタファーがテーマになっている かなりのページ数が割かれているシュメール文明や古代宗教神話などの部分は正にそのために書かれたものだろう それが物語をやや難解にさせてしまっているが、それを除けばサイバーパンク的アクションアニメといった感じで、どちらかと言うとポップでコミカルな印象だ 表現が回りくどすぎて場面が想像しにくいというのもあるが、暴力シーンでもフィクション的表現が多くやはり映画化よりもアニメ化向きの世界観と言える 独特で癖のある表現描写に始まり、解説不足の造語が多く、頻繁な場面変更、唐突に脈絡のない話が始まったり、前に少し出てきたキャラが補足説明もなく突然再登場したりするので特に序盤は状況を理解するのが難しい 後半で話しがまとまってきてようやく世界に惹き込まれるが、個人的には広げられた話の割になんとも微妙なエンディングだった 日本や日本人はやはりかっこ悪く描写されている(主人公はアフリカ系アメリカ人と在日韓国人のハーフのアメリカ人で名前だけ日本人)のも、ヒロインが意味もなく尻軽なのも理解不能であり楽しめない点であった | ||||

| メタバースは必ずしも重要でない気がする神経言語ハッキングの話。発想はすごく面白い。 相互理解を妨げる壁こそが、人類をウイルス的思考から守るというバベルの解釈とか。しかし読みづらい。みんな何を目的に行動しているのかよく分からないし、結末も結局ハッピーだったのか否か、判断しにくい。雰囲気がすごくニューロマンサー。 | ||||

| This novel seems especially weird when read in 2021 by a person is roughly the same age as the make protagonist. Hiro , by the way, has an awesomely literary name, which may have kept me reading in the early pages that I found a little tedious. Readers must be careful not to read too much of this as truth, especially those lacking in both historical and religious education as some concepts are presented to fit the plot. The inclusion of the two "romantic" plotlines are important vehicles but not well rendered as regards to emotion, although, maybe that is de rigueur in the metaverse . | ||||

| I continue to read Stephenson's books now and again (particularly when they show up on the Kindle $1.99 list), and my reaction is always the same. First, I can't put it down because his prose is just so readable... Second, I get bogged down in the philosophy and history and technology, which is either too arcane or not detailed enough (or, in the case of Snow Crash, both)... Third, the payoff is jejune, playing out like a bad action movie with an even worse director. So I'm left thinking the book was kind of fun and breezy, but I can't say I'd recommend it. And, oh yeah, there's a 15-year-old teen having sex with an adult. It's necessary as a plot point (though weirdly described), but totally inappropriate, even for a book written in 2003, way before #metoo. It's statutory rape. The sad thing is that the teenager could easily have been 19 and it wouldn't have changed the story or plotlines at all. So it makes me wonder a little bit about the author himself..... | ||||

| When Snowcrash is focussed on Rat Things and Kouriers it's pretty good entertainment. When it drops the exposition bombs and gets philosophical it tries too hard. If you can get past those sections (and the pretty gross sex scene that admittedly leads up to a half decent joke) then you've got a cool 80's six to synthwave comic style book to enjoy. | ||||

| I read this for a SF book club I'm in. It's my third cyberpunk novel, and I have to say I'm really not in to this genre. Though this one had some interesting themes, it left me wondering where's the closure. I'm still not sure the protagonist accomplished what he set out to do, or even if he had an outcome in mind. | ||||

| Well, I don’t like the ending...I was hoping for something more apocalyptic. Anyway, I think there are too many holes in the characters’ relationships. Not only that it as also the same for those people in powers too. It must be something that I missed the dynamics between everything. I think the author had a great imagination but the execution needs a lot of polishing. I really like the idea of getting historical biblical involves with techy and linguistic stuff. Far-fetched for sure! | ||||

| The only reason I finished it is I liked the two main characters. The future as written from the 90’s is somewhat interesting and prescient to the person that recommended it to me. The ending falls off a cliff abruptly with one interesting character left behind. The writer must have become bored with it or never heard about tying a neat little bow at the end. | ||||

| I read this book after reading many of his other books (Cryptonomicon, Reamde, Seveneves), so I had high expectations that weren't met. This is a reasonably good first novel from a really good author. Exposition is a bit clunky (not quite "Tell me Professor, what do I need to know?", but close) Interesting and motivated characters. Near-future post-government corporate economy. Mr Stephenson always tests your vocabulary. The main characters are two white-hat hackers, and a "skateboard" courier. Other, somewhat secondary characters include Raven, Uncle Enzo, whom I cannot describe better than Mr Stephenson does. | ||||

| Thw idea of going into virtual reality was what tweaked my interest in the book. I started reading it and really go turned of about halfway through with the religious rants and the details of something I can care less about. I stopped reading it because the past 6 chapters I have read have been about religion and have put me to sleep. | ||||

| I bought this as a gift for someone who really liked the book Ready Player One and they were disappointed and said this book is pretty boring. Maybe it gets better toward the end - but if you're buying this because you liked Ready Player One then maybe read a sample first. | ||||
