A really fun William Gibson fan story. At first this book seems a bit behind the times, but persevere as its deep in theology and reason - intriguingly so in this modern world of ours.

This is my first Stephenson book. I bought it for my son who is majoring in computer programming. The premise, that the human mind can be programmed using an ancient language, was too much of a stretch for me. The characters, cool exaggeration/extrapolation of the US society and of virtual reality in the future, hip slang and cultural word plays, and stream of flow action - easily made up for that. This was an entertaining read; I foresee reading this again.

Whatever I could or would write would be euphemistic; even the most lavish praise; the most groveling compliments; the most blatant and overdone positive review; alas....it needs to be said, there i(s no w)ay around it, I've been crashed, totally and utterly. Sheer genius, unrivaled creativity, peerless depth, originality and most importantly, FUN. If you read these Stephenson books for passing time during a break or at home, ensconced in your most luxurious sofa with your sights on some much needed evasion then this is it. I wrote before. "AT LAST, an author that can rival the genius of Frank Herbert..." and frankly, I believe we have a new master sci-fi story teller on our hands. I only wish us readers many more Stephenson titles in the future, I have declared myself an official hard core fan. Hey, I have to uphold my biased insight approach, enjoy!!!

The Amazon email I got demanding I write about this audio book, asked "How did this item meet [my] expectations? I didn't have any expectations. Somebody related it to William Gibson's writing, which I have greatly enjoyed for many years. Gibson is significantly more subtle, smooth and eloquent. But most of his books that I have read were newer than this one from way back in 1992 (according to Che). Compared to Gibson, whom I believe, is still writing, this was published in a whole different age. Gradually, I got into Snow Crash, and overall, rather enjoyed it. But I'd still rather read William Gibson. He has more depth.

I hated this book. I don't see the hype. There were too many unnecessary story lines that went nowhere and the development was awful. Holy Info dump batman. Worse yet, those info dumps by an AI was a good part of the book. It's not much of a story and more of an undeveloped idea.

Good read and held me to the end. The end seemed a bit rushed to tie up all the treads for the story. Enjoyed it.

I know this book is really popular and a cyber punk classic but I lost interest with how in depth the story links back to some sort of biblical history.

This is a sprawling tale of a decidedly dystopian technofuture. It is probably responsible for putting the term avatar into common usage. As with Neuromancer there are only a couple of elements (references to cathode ray tubes) to signal that it was written some time ago, otherwise it still seems as prescient now as when it was written. This is epic story telling in the old fashioned style, in the manner of Dickens and Trollope it has big story and it is in no hurry about telling it. Although the story certainly does not drag, it may require some determination to stick with it till conclusion, but it is worth the effort. [There is quite a lot of stuff in the middle of the book about language and programming, those with an interest might want to read some Wittgenstein and research the Sapir Worf hypothesis, neither of which were mentioned, as I recall, but are potentially of interest.]

Superb. Wikipedia meets Neuromancer in a frenzy of tonal mish mash & questionable interpretations of the age of consent. Ambitious & largely on the money with future tech predictions. Recommended.

The first half of this book was a bit slow and some parts seemed to go long on character development and plot setup, but it was worth sticking with it. The second half of the book picked up pace and was interesting with vivid imagery.

Being 23 years of age I'm presumably a few years older than the target group for this book. It's a bit too fast-forward and rough around the edges for me. The book contains a light story made complex primarily by the authors style. The historcal, religious and sociological background give it some depth though, making it worth the read for me despite several weak points.

Incredible story. In the real world or the Metaverse...keep it straight as they interact. High speed fun.

... more accurate and prophetic than Sci-fi written 20 years later. Should make an excellent film.

I love the imagination, the light hearted atmosphere, and the endless procession of fun situations and concepts. It's delightfully rich and realized. However, the pseudo-science philosophical mysticism that makes up a chunk of the middle of the book is unbearable, and the endless "binary code hurr durr" stuff is pure face palm, at least in 2016. Still, the good parts (which is most of the book) as so good that it's still an incredibly enjoyable read.

A pessimistic view of the future where people split time between a VR metaverse and a world where corporations and other organizations have formed their own independent mini-nations. The protagonist spends time in both worlds on an adventure that involves pizza delivery, couriers, hacking, Sumerian culture, ww2 history, and more.
