Not for everyone. Very on the nose, over the top exaggeration of America mixed with some great sci fi elements.

Snow Crash - white noise

I feel bad to join the two star crowd here. I love SF and I bought the paper version when I found this title on a list of the best 10 SF books to read (which shows how subjective our tastes are). Well, now I know I don't like cyberpunk or at least I don't like Neal Stephenson's writing. Sorry Neal, there are some great ideas and imagery in your book but I got bored after the first quarter. Just to give an idea of what kind of SF books I like here are few of the authors I admire: Arthur C. Clark, Isaac Asimov, Strugatsky Brothers, Stanislav Lem, Ursula K. Le Guin, etc.

Worth reading on Kindle

This book was a really fun ride. I highly recommend reading snow crash on Kindle because of the many historical and religious references. You can use the Kindle dictionary and it has links to Wikipedia. To truly understand the book this is necessary. Your other alternative is to constantly have a dictionary with you or be in front of a computer screen to Google things.

Good reading

It is fascinating book considering it was written in 92. It has high speed internet, drones, and virtual reality stuff in it, along with some interesting different communities. And the story is pretty fun. However, I had hard time reading about all the Sumerian 'magic' language stuff so I gave it 4/5.

Mind boggling

Great invention work that installs this novel as the standard for postcyberpunk. Couldn't put it down.
On par with other major Stephenson novels.

Glimpse a future getting closer every day

The visions of future technology is much talked about. The Metaverse and VR are jointly at the top of the hype cycle
But it is the predictions in the vision of the real world that is truly frightening
Frightening because it is our direction of travel. Listen to pro-Brexit visions and Mr. Trumps desires and you see the future from here coming into focus.
Where is Hiro to save us?

Bit dated but good read

A cross between the matrix and Indiana jones. Lots of action. The explanation of the world from a politics perspective is prett warped. Corps may run the government but the government isn't another Corp. that part needed some more of xplanation

Cartoonish cyberpunk adventure

Hailed as one of the defining classics of the 'cyberpunk' subgenre of SF, I'm probably reading 'Snow Crash' a good 20 years after the concepts it portrayed were groundbreaking, but it still holds up pretty well as a novel. Bouncing between the exploits of a sword-wielding pizza delivery driver/hacker, and a courier who hitches lifts by harpooning passing vehicles, the early chapters in particular are breathtaking. There is an assured swagger to Stephenson's prose, with wild action and a vivid setting in a future USA that has been transformed into a series of semi-autonomous corporate-owned suburbs, whilst the idea of a language that can rewrite human brains is a suitably heavyweight SF concept. It's not flawless however, as the longer the book goes on, the more the tongue in cheek humour develops into an over-the-top comicbook-style sensibility. Ultimately, it becomes impossible to take any of it seriously, and it doesn't so much draw to a satisfying close as suddenly stop.

There are is still plenty here to enjoy, and many of Stephenson's obsessions are readily apparent - but ultimately, though this may have been groundbreaking at the time, I feel that some of Stephenson's later books ('Cryptonomicon' and 'The Baroque Trilogy') are simply better written.

Entertaining but directionless

I enjoyed the conversations with the Librarian--the religious/historic events and how they intertwine and shed light on the issue at hand. I was hooked with style of the first chapter about the Deliverator (and later the chapter from the doggie's POV). Aside from doggie-POV, it was confusing why the author employed such differing writing styles in different chapters. Overall, I kept having the feeling that I didn't know where the plot was going. You could argue that's a good thing (e.g it's unpredictable), but I just never felt like I got the "point" of the book. It was entertaining in many places.

Stupid and childish

I would only recommend this to a preteen with a poor grasp of reality. Total garbage. Only read it because it showed up on a beat sci-if list. How it got there I'll never know.
Don't bother- unless juvenile wish fulfillment is your thing.

Good, not great

Good read and hard to put down. I try not to give out 5 stars unless it is a book I find will stick with me. This one won't but I'd still recommend it. Enjoy the read.

Hiro Protagonist!

A classic! Original, action-packed but with wonderful humor...even the near-future dystopia of its setting gets closer every day. This is one of those books that friends may tire of hearing you rave about, not unusual for Stephenson's books, but gets better with each re-reading.

An absolute must read sci-fi classic. So far ahead of it's time. This was my first time reading Neal Stephenson and now I'll be digging in to his entire catalogue.
