A Fun Read With Depth

This has to be one of the more surprisingly entertaining reads I've ever had the pleasure to enjoy. It starts off with a seemingly ridiculous premis, but eventually becomes an engrossingly complex (though not too much so) and worthwhile cyberpunk tale with an almost satirical whiz and bang throughout. I mean come on, someone with the audacity to name their main character Hiro Protagonist has to back it up with real cleverness. And Mr. Stephenson does just that. A real classic.

like the story's protagonist

Sumerian myth. Tower of Babel. Virtual Reality. Making puppets of people controlled by radio. Programmers vulnerable to a destroyer visual signal. Mafia, Religious fervor based on a privately owned aircraft carrier and an Inuit with a hydrogen fusion bomb that surfs ocean waves to get around the world. Oh yeah, and some stuff I forgot, like the story's protagonist, Hiro. But I can't tell it all like Neil does, no way.

Hell of a ride!

Fast, funny, inventive. The Metaverse sequences are like Tron on crack. I highly recommend it.

A novel filled with technical jargon and winding plot.

I chose to read this book after a suggestion from a friend and it has definitely been a pleasant surprise. Although, I primarily read techno-thriller novels this book has certain aspects such as its technical jargon I really like.

I really enjoyed reading Snow Crash

I really enjoyed reading Snow Crash. The first couple of chapters were painful though. Just get through the first couple, and the book goes in a much better direction.

A good read

Many of the reviews here already sum this book up nicely. It is a fast paced, whacky comic book romp with some (imho) excellent vision of a cyber-future considering that it was written in the early '90s. There are the usual Neal Stephenson components - excellent characters that you grow to really like, crazy action and a complicated geeky main premise that can make your head hurt. A good read that sucks you in but doesn't quite deliver the neat ending(s) I was hoping for

Incredibly cool book

It's an incredibly cool book. If you love the first chapter you'll love the book because it keeps that whole awesome tone the whole book.
The book's only problem is the three or four chapters spent educating the reader's on ancient Sumerian religions. I would recommend that you skim or skip literally every chapter that has Hiro talking to the librarian. To say that they're detailed is putting it mildly.
I honestly think the book would be perfect if those chapters were completely removed.

Anyway awesome book apart from that.

Good book - but...

Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash seeks to draw you into a Cyberpunk future where the Mafia and smaller city-states quite literally own the world (or their small piece of it), and some dark and terrible force threatens both the real and virtual world to it's core. But it takes it's time doing so and sometimes the plot seems to take little side detours to draw you away from the main plot line. Don't get me wrong, it's an enjoyable read, but one that I'm content to do once, as the characters sometimes suffer from having simple motivations and reactions and often represent some wish fulfillment on the authors part. (the main character is the "BEST" swordsman in the world and practically invented the virtual world while taking no credit for it, main character two is a rebellious skater chick, leader of the Mafia is a nice older family guy that is unnaturally interested in two up to this point unimportant characters who somehow now are the only hope for the future, etc).

And even when you find out the final twist, it's essentially a yawn, "yeah, blah, blah, ancient Sumerian, take over the world, evil genius flees with one thing that can destroy him". I loved it for the future it painted in that it was unique and definitely had a Cyberpunk flavor, but I found myself wishing that there was a few less pages and a little more character motivation or uniqueness in the middle of it.

A question to ask yourself if you're on the fence about reading this book...

If you're trying to decide whether or not to read this book, I think I've come up with a fool proof way to determine if it's worth your time. It's an easy test, really, and it is simply this: how do you respond to the following statement? The main character's name is Hiro Protagonist.

Do you think that's funny? Cute? Does it make you smack your forehead in wonder? If so, you will without a doubt be blown away by the rest of the book. On the other hand, if you're like me and can't get past feeling like "Hero Protagonist" was a placeholder used by the author until inspiration struck, only it never did and so he was left there wondering, like a freshman Philosophy major, "why don't I just call him that?", you will probably be unable to get around that mental image of the author and the rest of the book does nothing to refute it.

I've heard this was supposed to be mind-boggling. It's not. Maybe when it first came came out, but the best books are timeless. This feels like a relic. I've heard this was supposed to be funny. It's not. Unless you're the kind of person who thinks a name like "Themaine Character" is clever. I've heard this was supposed to be "fun." It's not. Reading this was a chore, and the only reason I powered through it was because I figured there would be a moment when it all clicked, because this couldn't possibly have a 4-star rating otherwise. Unfortunately, that moment never came.

So, don't let my wasted time be in vain. If you're on the fence about reading this book, refer back to my first question. I really do think it will help.
