Great setting, well-thought-out premise, it just wasn't about the characters so much as what was unfolding around the characters. The world and plot were the characters.

Interesting ideas, and a fun snapshot of the future from the time it was written, but ultimately lacks mastery and polish.

Oh my god, what a horrible book. A very geeky book written by someone who doesn't know a single thing about technology, combined with horrible writing style, ridiculous character names, ridiculous dialog, and a plot that makes no sense. It couldn't have been much worse.

Still Stephenson's best work IMO. Probably because it is a more approachable book being that it is not 10million pages long and due to the fact that it ends at a high point. A lot of his other works give you to much, they build and build and build and then the last arc lets you down, but I still recommend them to people who ask haha.

Just writing a review so that when I get recommendations for other books that I might like they don't base it on this one. Although the book came recommended to me through a friend (so they clearly enjoyed reading) I didn't care for it much. I found it overly descriptive, with an attempt to be creative but thought the words that were created to describe living environment, etc to lack imagination. This is completely just my personal opinion.

My headline is a summary of all I am feeling, having finished an intense ride with Hiro, Y.T., Enzo, Raven and Rife. Too bad Da5id wasn't here to celebrate the smash-up ending. A must-read for all Mafia pizza deliverers, techno-babbling gargoying Kourier hackers, and their friends. Second Lifers should read it like Genisis.

Don't be put off by this being deemed a sci fi classic. It's very readable and enjoyable with great characters and exciting action. The author creates a vivid picture of the future. Considering it was written in the early 90s, I believe, it is a remarkable vision of the near future.

As a Software Developer I enjoyed it , not sure if it's for the general public, the technical details make it, in my opinion, the good it is.

I read this after finishing Stephenson's "Diamond Age" and being sent into an insatiable craze for additional material. Even though the book covers material and fields that were in their infancy at the time of writing and said materials and fields have developed substantially in the time between my reading and Stephenson's writing of the book, I still found the book refreshing without seeming dated.

My first and probably only book by this author. Some interesting concepts, but superficial, predictable and boring.

Read SevenEves before this one, better book as author was more experienced it felt. Snow Crash was good in some ways but in the end too many ideas crushed into one book. Very skate world, tech nerd oriented so I learned some things but best upshot was the linguistic physiological origins discussions. That felt like smart science fiction, the rest felt like reading at tweaker geek fantasy diary.

This book drives along at a snails pace. In fact, rather than being called Snow Crash, it should be called Snails Pace. It is very well written and great for finding new vocab words but it is filled with superfluous descriptions that do nothing to move the story along. We get it, you know big words and how to use them, now tell us the damn story. Reading this book was like a long chore that seems rewarding at the onset but quickly becomes an exercise in drudgery. I think the main reason I did not enjoy this book was due to my inability to buy into Stephenson's fictional ideas, they seemed less plausible than most of the science fiction I read, even though I do secretly believe that governments will be superseded by corporations in the future. One more thing. Is Hiro Protagonist really the protagonist, or just the person the author chooses to follow for most of the book. Am I the only one who hates that character? Cocky, inconsiderate, terrible-friend, one dimensional, no sense of humor, oh wow he's so good at sword fighting and hacking lets give him a freaking medal! Hope I didn't leave any more spoilers in there, I would write one with spoilers but it would take too long.

Of all the Neal Stephenson books I've read, this is my go-to when it comes to sharing with others or reading again for the heck of it. Fast paced adventure and suspense melded with some history and anthropology (my favorite). It's a wild ride that might actually teach you something new, and I like that in novels. It's what makes them... novel.
