Stephensen is evocative and compelling in the depiction of the fantastic dystopia that his character inhabit. He clearly has a handle on the kind of tongue in cheek glitz and despair that make up the backdrop of the best cyberpunk novels. Arguably, when presented with a main character with the last name of protagonist, Stephensen's tongue is firmly lodged in said cheek, so maybe one should be able to overlook nothing much beyond sex as a primary motivation. His female characters, however, have not aged well. When seen through Hiro's eyes, she is primarily a sex object. YT, a teen, shows plenty of depth only to later become a fetish as well. Gross. With this, I decided that maybe another book was more worth my time.

I'm a big fan of Stephenson and this was one of the first books of his that I read nearly two decades ago. Reading it again was worth it! His foresight on technological evolution and resultant new cultural affinity groups in this Snowcrash universe stands the test of time...

This was released in 1992. This is the most astonishing fact about this astonishing book. As enjoyable and insightful and weirdly prophetic this book is today - remember this was written before the Internet was the worldwide standard. A milestone in science fiction, or fiction, or literature, or books.

Better than average story. Great characters and sorry.

Well, I don’t like the ending...I was hoping for something more apocalyptic. Anyway, I think there are too many holes in the characters’ relationships. Not only that it as also the same for those people in powers too. It must be something that I missed the dynamics between everything. I think the author had a great imagination but the execution needs a lot of polishing. I really like the idea of getting historical biblical involves with techy and linguistic stuff. Far-fetched for sure!

I got this book when I went to look at reviews for Ready Player One. Someone said this book has better character development. What a terrible lie. Not to mention the pedophilia in the book between a 15 year old girl and one of the main villains. The story is disjointed and badly put together. Characters are not better developed. They're just thrown at you with no real backstory. There is so much nonsense driven flavor text I found myself skipping chapters. TL;DR This book is not very good.

The only reason I finished it is I liked the two main characters. The future as written from the 90’s is somewhat interesting and prescient to the person that recommended it to me. The ending falls off a cliff abruptly with one interesting character left behind. The writer must have become bored with it or never heard about tying a neat little bow at the end.

This book is terrible, the writing is trash, and the storyline is sophomoric at best.

This is a very well turned out "edge of the seat" techno thriller. I loved it, and am certain I will read it again to pick up on the best bits I missed on my first "rocket ride" reading. Could not put it down.

I read this book after reading many of his other books (Cryptonomicon, Reamde, Seveneves), so I had high expectations that weren't met. This is a reasonably good first novel from a really good author. Exposition is a bit clunky (not quite "Tell me Professor, what do I need to know?", but close) Interesting and motivated characters. Near-future post-government corporate economy. Mr Stephenson always tests your vocabulary. The main characters are two white-hat hackers, and a "skateboard" courier. Other, somewhat secondary characters include Raven, Uncle Enzo, whom I cannot describe better than Mr Stephenson does.

Good story. It was interesting, but got REALLY interesting at about the 1/2-way mark. Fascinating, even. Makes me want to study Sumerian. Not that I plan on uploading any videos of white noise to Youtube or anythink like that, mind you. Nope.

Stephenson merges the development of language, religion and consciousness into a thoroughly credible action story. This would be a great way to study linguistic theory.

I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. On the other hand, it does have the faults that some complained about in the one star reviews. I just didn't care because I was laughing so hard.

When you think a sci-fi book was too short or too short on details... when you want a sequel... it is just fabulous. Loved the dog rat things and YT!!
