| Ruth Rendell's Barbra Vine books are too far out and dark for my taste. I have loved traveling around with good old Inspector Wexford, Dora and the daughters for many years. | ||||

| I read the first page and was immediately hooked -- the wooded estate on a cold snowy night, the frozen pond -- drew such a word picture I felt I was there. Chief Inspector Wexford persists in seeing murder where colleagues see accident. The story faltered a bit toward the end with a little too much going on with all the characters -- but it picked up the pace again before I'd lost interest, in time for a satisfying ending. One of Rendell's well-written stories. | ||||

| Excellent book for mystery fans .Ruth Rendell books are always well written , never disappoint.I have read most of her books & always enjoy them . I like the books she writes as Barbra Vane too. | ||||

| I really like Ruth Rendell's earlier Inspector Wexford books, unlike her other psychologically, weird books, sometimes written under Ruth Rendell and sometimes under Barbara Vine. Her earlier books (which includes "Put On By Cunning") are some of the best mysteries I have ever read. I especially would recommend "To Death With Doon" and "Shake Hands Forever". | ||||

| good style wavering between excessive detail at times to rather abrupt cut offs. took quite a while to get into the story,this is my first wexford novel,or maybe not, but a character well crafted where events occur around him to his good fortune | ||||

| Rendell only gets better. Her characters are finely drawn and behave in believable ways, always a satisfactory element in a novel. The plot has sufficient previews that are subtle enough not to allow accurate prediction of the ending, but they are there. There is none of the improbable surprises that ruin an ending by destroying that wonderful sense of suspended disbelief. The book is a good read, well worth the time. Bettie Banks | ||||

| Even though this early Ruth Rendell is dated--DNA evidence today would solve the plot, which takes place at least thirty years ago, almost instantly--the novel is suspenseful and clever. Inspector Wexford has been a fine character for Rendell; his astuteness and humanity alone are enough to keep the reader interested. Definitely a good read--as just about all of Rendell or Vine's fiction is. | ||||

| Wexford gets in the the grip of one of his obsessions when he suspects a crime has been committed and the death of an older musician of international fame might not have been accidental. Nobody believes Wexford (except his trusted partner Burden, of course.) Wexford's superiors are unwilling to allow him to entertain what they believe are baseless suspicions.Wexford, however, is convinced that there is something wrong about Natalie, the late flutist's daughter, who came back unexpectedly into her father's life after almost two decades of absence. Is Natalie who she says she is? Why is she behaving so suspiciously? The dedicated detective is so committed to finding the truth that he travels to California on his own dime to find out the truth about his case. As readers, we get the added bonus of seeing Wexford and his wife Dora travel in the US and their reactions to this country. Wexford's search for the truth does not end in the US, though. We will also see him travel to France in his attempt to crack this difficult case. In the end, however, the readers will still be surprised by the tangled web of complexities and coincidences in one of Wexford's most challenging cases. I believe this is one of the best novels in the Wexford/Burden series. In my opinion, though, Wexford novels are less engaging than Rendell's stand-alone mysteries. For this reason, I give the book four stars. | ||||
