| ウェクスフォード警部11。 著名な老音楽家が極寒の湖で溺死した。当初、事故死として扱われていたが、若き婚約者が、娘による遺産を狙った殺人を示唆する。音楽家は、19年振りに突然現れた娘が偽物であると婚約者に打ち明けていたのだった…。 上司に疎まれつつ、事件の捜査に着手するウェクスフォード警部。この娘、怪しさこの上ないのだが、なかなか確たる証拠が掴めない。本作品は、警部と警部の妻ドーラの仲睦まじいカリフォルニア旅行の様子が描かれる。妻のご機嫌を取りながら、渡米していた容疑者の足跡を辿る警部。疑惑がつのるものの、決定的な証拠が見つからないまま時が過ぎてしまう。読み進めながら、ジリジリするだろう。 そして、新たな殺人が…という展開。幻惑されつつも、真相はそこか！真犯人は何と！だ。シリーズがマンネリに陥らないための苦心作ということろか。肩透かしか否かは難しいが、意外さという点で愉しめた。 本作品のウェクスフォード一家のエピソードは、女優として名が売れてきた警部の娘の結婚である。 | ||||

| Too ‘clever’? Too tricksy. I thought I knew where it was going until near the denouement. Strange tempo. In the end, less satisfying. | ||||

| The box was all cracked and CD1 does not play at all. CD2 very poor quality sound. Only fit for the bin and as it was abused rather than used, not worth sending back! I have bought a few of these Book CDs and had no problem before. | ||||

| A wonderful book...I enjoyed the traveling. Ending was difficult. Cooper was not a well defined character. I will continue to read Ruth Rendell's mysteries. She is a great writer. | ||||
