| I really liked this book the twist and turns kept you guessing right up to the end .He did slot of traveling and the descriptions were so very good you almost felt like you were with him.looking forward to the next book as always | ||||

| This story was hard for me to follow, unlike the other Wexford novels, among my favorite whodunits. There seemed to be so many words and deeds and characters to consider and sort out that I gave up guessing who the killers were and gamely kept reading. The last few pages gave me what I wanted. Good effort, Ms Rendell. Keep 'em coming. | ||||

| Its been a few years since I last read this mid-period Wexford novel and I seem to remember that it was not one of my favourites. It still isn't BUT it I did enjoy it much more than I expected to. It starts off really well and I liked the main trio of suspects, the Zoffanys and especially the charming and intriguing Natalie Arno. Then it goes a bit flat with Reg and Dora's trip to California which, ultimately, seems a bit unnecessary and really just an excuse for Rendell to write about foreign parts for a change! She really enjoys herself with the descriptive passages here (and again later on in the South of France) but I'm not sure that any of it adds much to the actual story. Things pick up a bit again towards the end though I do sometimes wish that Reg's explanations to his stooge Burden of 'how it all happened' weren't QUITE so drawn out as they always are! I'm sure most of the readers are quite a bit ahead of him by this time! Anyway, its all well thought out and quite clever and I did really enjoy re-reading this one. | ||||

| Ruth Rendell once again excels in generating a who-dunnit that keeps one turning the pages. A long-absent daughter returns after her father's death. The victim's fiance goes to Chief Inspector Wexford with her concerns that the daughter is not who she claims to be, but an impostor trying to claim the family inheritance. A gruesome twist means that Wexford has added reasons to solve the puzzle. Read and enjoy. | ||||

| She is great, and I like it that she has allowed her hero to age, but to still be a viable human being with a brain and ability beyond youth. I read all her Wexford books. Some of her other writing gets a little too intense for my tastes, but she is always erudite and well researched. | ||||

| This book published by "arrow books" is the very same book published by "'Ballantine Books " under the title "Death notes". Quite unpleasant to discover this when you have ordered both books, and you think you have two excellent pageturners awaiting you . Moreover the plot is extremely intricated and not very credible. | Ruth Rendell, is one of my favorite authors. I have read all of her books but am enjoying re-reading some of her earlier works. Her plots are so intricate and she began in the 50's so I can read them again.. My kindle enables me to pick up these reissued copies at bargain rates. I am enjoying seeing how her style evolved and as I grew up in England I can relate to the scenes and the mores of that decade. For me it evokes nostalgia,but any anglophile will find it facinating. | ||||
