Wild ride

I will start by saying that I have been in the technology business for 25 years, so the technology aspects of Snow Crash really appealed to me. Although like many others where his detailed analysis of Sumerian linguistics made the book drag, the book really is a masterpiece of cyberpunkism wrapped around a plausible dystopia. There were many aspects of the work that really spoke to me:

1. Programmers really don't program anymore: In the time since Neal published this book to the here and now, programming has largely become a factory operation. There is far less exploring and creating and much more tweaking. Offshoring and maturity of the industry has turned an art into much more of an assembly line
2. The federal government: Neal's description of inefficiencies relating to the Fed are laugh out loud hysterical. I especially loved the part of the toilet paper pool being the only allowed employee pool allowed. I believe the Fed section could be made into required reading for all politicians and leaders within the beltway.
3. Metaverse and Second Life: The parallels here are well documented.
4. Franchising of everything: The idea of everything being a franchise and a stripe mall is not new, but the depth to which Snow Crash paints a picture of how these services work for consumers is really genius.
5. Violence and Security: Reading Snow Crash is a bit unnerving in this area. Life and violence intertwine throughout the book, and the picture the book paints is troubling when weighed against the backdrop of all the senseless violence that is part of our current events these days.

I do agree that the book is also a bit "Hollywood-esque" in parts, but this will make for a fine movie. I can't wait to see the movie!

Too hip for its own good

I expect that I'm not in the demographic here (ie older), so all of the super cool language and characters didn't really strike a chord. Nonetheless, the story was fresh and got on with a good pulse, and the Assyrian (?) backstory was thought provoking. I'll try again with other works of this author, but I don't think I'll be revisiting this story.

Great book

Loved this book, so crazy and fun. In a futuristic world that has taken overpopulation to the next level, the only place anyone wants to be is online in the Metaverse.

A bit dated, but still a great read

While some of the technology doesn't stand the test of time, it holds up far better than some of the "classic" cyberpunk out there. Snow Crash gets a bit lost at times, but overall it is an entertaining read.

Cyber Punk at it's best

This book was both brilliant and funny. The references to government jobs, wars, and gangs is an interesting satire on life in America. I really enjoyed this book.

Great read.

A little dated, but a great read none the less.
The infrastructure of the society in the story is a little far fetched, but it
does really good job, of showing excesses of PC that existed, and still do
to a current degree in our society (at least in the US).

The second book of his I read

An incredibly awesome tale, for my money, cooler than Blade Runner (though not by much, respect shall be payed) and worth the read.

ONE OF A KIND

I am a long time scifi reader and was surprised for the innovative approach to virtual worlds taken by Stephenson in this novel. Snow crash makes for fun, fast paced reading. Highly recommendable!

Fast-paced action scenes in real and virtual worlds interlaced with sporadic thoughts about religions seen as brain viruses

Snow Crash is the third Neal Stephenson book I read (Crypto-Nomicon, Reamde) as always with renewed pleasure.

In regard to Snow Crash itself, my review's title gives a good account of what's behind the cover of this book. A classic of the SciFi/Hacker genre well deserving its 5-star and your consideration if you haven't read it yet.

About Neal, his subject matters are intelligent and its prose allies expert approach to technical fields with quick-witted humor.

Note: I had found that Neal's books I've read to date are sequenced to be read in burst of around 30-40 mns, a perfect match for commuters using public transports. Keep alert not to miss your subway/bus stop while reading. ;)

What's not to love...

about a samurai sword wielding, pizza delivering protagonist, named Hiro Protagonist? With his pod YT, a good doggie, the Mafia and some really sweet tech, they set out to collect some intel to sell to the CIA. What ensues, however, is a battle of good vs. some pretty nasty bad guys with names like Raven and L. Bob Rife.

The audio book has a wonderful narrator. The Kindle edition has the whisper synch feature so you can follow along for a more immersive experience. I have no idea how the narrator keeps all the different voices straight over the course of the book.

I have listened to and read this book 3 times so far and until I know the entire book by heart, I probably won't stop. If you love sci-fi or cyberpunk or just fun stories then read this.

The simple act of writing this review makes me want to read it again.

Snow crash or paralel world

The book in itself is suspensful, lots of imagination. But the part I thought was excellent was the description of life in the metaverse, i.e., the virtual world, evrything makes sense by the way it was built (and explained how) by hackers, si it's also quite actual.

The characters and life in the future are well developed, includin humor: pizza delivery as the most important activity in the USA, for instance, and run by an italina by the name of Enzo.

I highly recommend it for those who enjoy this type of fiction

Don't like writing style

I bought this on a recommendation from a friend but it is not for me.. Amazon should not make this field mandatory. The stars should be enough. Angry Amazon forcing me to use more words.

Love this book

Bought the Kindle edition to replace an old worn out paperback version. Hope the upcoming movie stays true to the book.

Syncretism meets Segregation

What happens when someone with the power to dominate a diverse populace with secrets from the past runs into an unlikely set of bedfellows who would rather have freedom than uniformity?

This book happens, and it happens to have that magical blend of character, concept, and charisma that makes the unlikely and sometimes unwieldy plot worth the ride.

car crash

There are some really interesting ideas in this book and a whole bunch of allegedly innovative thinking about virtual reality but there are no interesting characters and the plot collapses into garble around when the Sumerian elements are introduced.

One of his best

This and "Diamond age" are, in my opinion, Stephenson's best works. I read Cryptonomicon and got most of the way through the Baroque cycle and didn't even try Anathem, but Snow Crash is one of the best cyperpunk novels since Neuromancer.

Excellent Read

This book is extremely entertaining. I love the world that Stephenson creates - not exactly a distopia, but a more realistic chaotic future.
