While Neal is terrible at writing endings, and this one ended as ubruptly as any book I have ever read, he has a great imagination and created a wonderful world to play in.

Snow Crash was one heck of a ride. It started off with the interesting Mafia-Pizza connection, jacking of rides and the like that really kept my attention. There were times I felt some beliefs systems were being marginalized under the guise of technology and science as the only truths, but lest I digress. Wasn't sure where the book wanted to go a couple of times throughout the plot line, cyberpunk - action/drama - post-modern survival in a crazy futuristic world, yet it still worked. Neal Stephenson presented a unique dystopia for the future that was still interesting and fun.

I read Snow Crash after it was recommended by several friends and reading that it was a well-regarded SF novel. It was a shame then that it was nowhere near as enjoyable as I had expected. Although it was published in 1999 and can therefore be expected to be dated technologically, it was plagued by several other issues. I was especially tired of being beaten over the head by the constant over-sexualization of the character YT. In addition, the unbroken chapters of historical explanation were extremely tedious. Hiro (I appreciate the name joke) is too much of a flawless badass for whom just about everything goes smoothly even when it should not. The characters in general were very difficult to relate to. I still might recommend the book, but not without some hesitance.

It took a while for me to get into this but when I did I could put it down - great Stephenson style and a wonderful mix of virtual reality and mix of classic debates

Great characters and an active story. Also, was way ahead of its time in predicting the direction if technology. Hopefully less accurate on the future of society.

I heard about this book a lot on the web, always managing to find its way into the comments of threads along the line of 'what books should I read'. Everyone always seemed to be in love with this book whenever mentioned. So I picked it up and gave it a go. By the last 20 pages I couldn't wait to finish the book just to be done and move onto anything else. I feel like this book took an interesting core concept and completely ruined it. I probably ended up skimming through a third of this skipping over crappy religious monologues that never caught my interest. Then there's the author rushing to a sex scene then back peddling to explain the boring route they got there two minutes before. Plus I thought the ending was rushed.. and was written poorly. I just didn't really enjoy this book, couldn't wait to put it down for good. If you can get it cheap, $2 or under and want to gamble then go for it. But once you get to the librarian just realize that's going to be a big part of how the book reads the rest of the way. For reference I've liked such books as the Game of Thrones series (ASOIAF), Daemon, and Ready Player One.

Greatly enjoyed. The polymath capabilities of Stephenson are humbling. The plot of this novel is highly complex & engaging. As of 2014, some of the sci-fi elements are rather dated & it would be good to see new sci-fi.

Excellent entry into the genre' of "cyberpunk", and one of the "must-reads"of that niche. Buy this for any gamer that likes stories of hacking and covert ops.

Neal Stephenson writes science fiction that requires a certain level of attention and concentration to follow and stay on top of. You can’t lay a Stephenson novel down for a few days and hope to come back and take up where you left off. This is not pulp science fiction. In this audacious novel, Stephenson crafts a dystopian Earth near the end of the 20th century. Most civilization has broken down and even in the United States, society has devolved into semi-sovereign “franchulates” (franchise consulates) and “burbclaves” (suburban enclaves). A rampant form of pure capitalism reigns, with private ownership of roads and police protection. Existing alongside this “free for all” is a Metaverse, an on-line world governed largely by hackers. Now, dystopia coupled with virtual reality is nothing new, however Stephenson takes it up a notch, weaving Sumerian and Old Testament mythology throughout the story. Some may find elements of Stephenson’s world silly, and some of it is pretty far out there, but much of it comes across as biting satire and I found it enormously entertaining. The “heroes” of the story are Hiro Protagonist, a freelance stringer for Central Intelligence Corporation (a privatized successor to the Library of Congress), a computer software designer and the greatest sword fighter in the world (in the Metaverse) and Y.T., a souped up skateboard riding 15 year old courier. With the help of the Mafia (Cosa Nostra, Inc.) and assorted other supremely interesting characters, Hiro and Y.T. discover a new designer drug, Snow Crash, whose purpose is to inject a virus into the deepest level of the brain, acting much the same as a computer virus. Seeking to prevent spread of the virus, Hiro and Y.T. cross swords with Bob Rife, the richest man on the planet, who seeks to use Snow Crash to exert total control over the world's population. Elements of economic theory, religion, virtual reality, Sumerian mythology and linguistics take this story out of the realm of anything you’ve ever experienced. Four and a half stars, rounded up to five simply on the basis of its originality, scope and audacity.

One of the 100 best novels of the 20th century. If you haven't read it yet, better get started; from conceptual high tech to the tower of Babel it's all information you're gonna need to survive the 21st!

If you have not read Neal Stephenson, and like to see a different view of the near future, you are in for a treat. Thisis one of his early classics; I bought another copy so I could have one at work from which to quote.

Have listened to the Audible book twice and now have read it. It just keeps getting better. If you're a fan of great metaphors, this is the book for you. Great integration of linguistics and computer science. Great character development and story line.

Lots of great stuff in this book - really insightful and imaginative. It has elements of Carl Hiaasen in it - but better.

Shame I won't get a refund. It's so rare I won't finish a book but 60 per cent in and I can't face this dull read anymore this is not cyberpunk it's an old persons rehash of 90s skate culture after this I'll never mention this book again
