| I had read this book before but had given it away and I wanted my husband to read it to introduce him to Ruth Rendell. I've loved her novels for years but he had never read any of them. He loved it and is now reading another one of her books. Ruth Rendell can really make you feel like the characters are real. I love her writing style and can't wait for her next book. In my opinion, this story is one of her best. I could read it again! | ||||

| The writing is fine, she has always been good. I thought the plot of this novel was contrived. A man giving away his winnings in a lottery to individuals who he knows only in the vaguest sense and not giving any to the person who he admits helped him just doesn't "ring true" to me. I felt like I needed to know more about this person and his motivations than were given. | ||||

| Ruth Rendell's books invariably get five stars from me. This book, however, is not "5 star" The characters were unlikable so I could not get too involved with their plights and found that the plot was somewhat contrived. I did give it 3 stars because Ruth Rendell is never "terrible" | ||||
