interesting cultural touchstone

This book is somewhat a hacker cult classic. Through metaphor, Stephenson describes a what-if future of social media turned to immersive virtual reality and the emergence of cyber threats that migrate from the virtual to the physical. Here, virtual becomes perfected while the real world becomes a true dystopia. Living in a storage shed is acceptable as long as there's a wonderful virtual escape.

fun and prescient

While the book is a fun read and incredibly prescient related to tech...it's a bit of a rambler on unrelated or poorly connected tangents and plot points. If you can suspend belief and ignore historical fact, you're in for a good ride.

Good fast read

though I should have read it maybe a decade ago, it still manages to hold your attention. More mature readers might find the language slightly off-putting.

Over all good read

While Neal is terrible at writing endings, and this one ended as ubruptly as any book I have ever read, he has a great imagination and created a wonderful world to play in.

Many Direction to One Interesting Read

Snow Crash was one heck of a ride. It started off with the interesting Mafia-Pizza connection, jacking of rides and the like that really kept my attention. There were times I felt some beliefs systems were being marginalized under the guise of technology and science as the only truths, but lest I digress. Wasn't sure where the book wanted to go a couple of times throughout the plot line, cyberpunk - action/drama - post-modern survival in a crazy futuristic world, yet it still worked. Neal Stephenson presented a unique dystopia for the future that was still interesting and fun.

a slow burner but then couldn't put it down

It took a while for me to get into this but when I did I could put it down - great Stephenson style and a wonderful mix of virtual reality and mix of classic debates

in my mind a legend of Sci-Fi

Great characters and an active story.

Also, was way ahead of its time in predicting the direction if technology. Hopefully less accurate on the future of society.

Greatly enjoyed. The polymath capabilities of Stephenson are humbling

Greatly enjoyed. The polymath capabilities of Stephenson are humbling. The plot of this novel is highly complex & engaging. As of 2014, some of the sci-fi elements are rather dated & it would be good to see new sci-fi.

Original and Audacious; Wildly Entertaining

Neal Stephenson writes science fiction that requires a certain level of attention and concentration to follow and stay on top of. You can’t lay a Stephenson novel down for a few days and hope to come back and take up where you left off. This is not pulp science fiction.

In this audacious novel, Stephenson crafts a dystopian Earth near the end of the 20th century. Most civilization has broken down and even in the United States, society has devolved into semi-sovereign “franchulates” (franchise consulates) and “burbclaves” (suburban enclaves). A rampant form of pure capitalism reigns, with private ownership of roads and police protection. Existing alongside this “free for all” is a Metaverse, an on-line world governed largely by hackers. Now, dystopia coupled with virtual reality is nothing new, however Stephenson takes it up a notch, weaving Sumerian and Old Testament mythology throughout the story.

Some may find elements of Stephenson’s world silly, and some of it is pretty far out there, but much of it comes across as biting satire and I found it enormously entertaining. The “heroes” of the story are Hiro Protagonist, a freelance stringer for Central Intelligence Corporation (a privatized successor to the Library of Congress), a computer software designer and the greatest sword fighter in the world (in the Metaverse) and Y.T., a souped up skateboard riding 15 year old courier.

With the help of the Mafia (Cosa Nostra, Inc.) and assorted other supremely interesting characters, Hiro and Y.T. discover a new designer drug, Snow Crash, whose purpose is to inject a virus into the deepest level of the brain, acting much the same as a computer virus. Seeking to prevent spread of the virus, Hiro and Y.T. cross swords with Bob Rife, the richest man on the planet, who seeks to use Snow Crash to exert total control over the world's population. Elements of economic theory, religion, virtual reality, Sumerian mythology and linguistics take this story out of the realm of anything you’ve ever experienced. Four and a half stars, rounded up to five simply on the basis of its originality, scope and audacity.

Gtreat American literature

If you have not read Neal Stephenson, and like to see a different view of the near future, you are in for a treat. Thisis one of his early classics; I bought another copy so I could have one at work from which to quote.
