hope my daughter never comes across this garbage book

Terrible book. Would almost be a fun dystopian read until 3/4 in there is a beyond-disturbing erotic scene between a 15-YEAR-OLD GIRL and a grown-ass man. Threw it in the trash immediately and don't care how it ends.

What the actual F is wrong with you, Neal Stephenson??

This is one of the lowest quality hardcovers I've ever purchased.

Full disclaimer: This review is NOT about the content or story. I haven't read it yet.

I purchased the library bound version. Library binding is usually a laminated hardcover with no dust cover. I find that library bound books are usually terrific quality.

The physical book is of terrible quality. The entire cover looks like it was printed at low-resolution, it's blurry and pixelated. The interior pages are the thinnest and most fragile I've ever seen or felt in a book. Every page is see-through, like it's made of cheap recycled newspaper.

The quality of this book is just garbage. Don't buy this version, look for any other version on the market. I'm never buying from Turtleback Books again. I'm not even going to read this version because I not even confident that it's a legitimately licensed product based on how terrible the quality is. DO NOT BUY.

Don't recommend

The first few chapters read as immature to me, rambling into tangents that have no bearing on the plot. It often goes overboard explaining concepts which might be a product of its time. But this comes off as the author itrying to impress you with their knowledge. I couldn't personally get into the writing style.

Experimental writing style failure

Go to a bookstore and read the first chapter, see if you like the writing style. It strikes of some pseudointellectual art student. I couldn’t grasp onto any of the ideas and just didn’t care, my mind kept wandering. I read (had to reread for lack of concentration) through chapter 3 and stopped; it’s a waste of time. This one will just sit on a bookshelf.

Good Book, Bad Print

This is not a review of the content of thebook, but rather the printing quality. It looks a fake copy and the paper quality is worse than mass market paperbacks.

**NOT ABOUT THE WRITING!!**

This review is not about the actual story / writing but about the shocking quality of the book. The book cover itself feels like the inside of the book and feels horrible to hold, and also the printing looks really cheap and text looks smudged.

Wish I'd of got the kindle version

Over-rated Book

Other than the fact that this book introduced -- or at least is said to have introduced -- the concept of the Multiverse, I do not see why this novel is so highly regarded. The first thing that I look for in a novel is a cohesive story but what we have here is a scatter of ideas tied together with too many coincidences and oodles of happenstance. The basic storyline is very, very thin but the author has tried to force fit it to the mythology of Sumeria and he really needs a lot of force to fit it. Not a very intuitive fit. Perhaps smarter than I am can appreciate the delicacy of such a story. Unfortunately, I am unable to do so.

Don’t bother, read Neuromancer again instead

Juvenile and now dated. Too many car chases and explosions. Part of plot hinges on vagina dentata yet not at all in an interesting way.

A Bad and Boring Book

Firstly this is sci-fi and it has dated somewhat, alot of what is seen as the future has come to pass now to some level.
The story itself is utter trash and the book is overly padded with pointless chapters. The whole book could easily be edited to be half its length.

Exquisite Cyperpunk with a Fatal Flaw

Stephensen is evocative and compelling in the depiction of the fantastic dystopia that his character inhabit. He clearly has a handle on the kind of tongue in cheek glitz and despair that make up the backdrop of the best cyberpunk novels. Arguably, when presented with a main character with the last name of protagonist, Stephensen's tongue is firmly lodged in said cheek, so maybe one should be able to overlook nothing much beyond sex as a primary motivation. His female characters, however, have not aged well. When seen through Hiro's eyes, she is primarily a sex object. YT, a teen, shows plenty of depth only to later become a fetish as well. Gross. With this, I decided that maybe another book was more worth my time.

Does not compare to Ready Player One

I got this book when I went to look at reviews for Ready Player One. Someone said this book has better character development. What a terrible lie. Not to mention the pedophilia in the book between a 15 year old girl and one of the main villains. The story is disjointed and badly put together. Characters are not better developed. They're just thrown at you with no real backstory. There is so much nonsense driven flavor text I found myself skipping chapters. TL;DR This book is not very good.

Don’t waste your money

This book is terrible, the writing is trash, and the storyline is sophomoric at best.

Not what I was hoping

The story seemed to lack continuity and direction. The story was not what I expected nor was it what I thought I was buying based on the description and reviews. I read it all the way through anyway and was very disappointed in the last 1/10 of the book and the ending.

Bad quality

The cover fell off of the book the second I brought it out of the packaging. It’s like the binding glue set before the cover was put on....

Don’t read this book based on its cover

The book arrive within 5 days of ordering it, which was good. As for this book, and its genre of Science Fiction, based loosely on Computer hacking, viruses, Mafia, Religion, Morality, sex, it fails utterly to have even a half believable story. YT and Hiro are the heroes, they are the original pizza delivery guys, and then YT gets involved with Uncle Enzo, the Mafia chief. I tried to visualise it as a bit like the graphic image film Sin City, but this was poorly researched and very dragged out. I only purchased it as I’m in a Book Club, and am ashamed to admit I voted for this book based on its title. Avoid this nonsensical story, and give to charity instead.

Didn’t love it

Guess I was expecting more. I’ve read so much about this book over the years and it didn’t live up to the reputation for me. Perhaps getting dated. Interestingly he did predict the emergence of innovations in skateboards which we see today. Not specifically but generally - nobody is harpooning cars for a ride just yet :-) Perhaps it’s better to pick up one of his new novels to enjoy the speculation on future innovations more.

Not worth the read

Very fragmented story, not easy to follow thru. It has some interesting chapters but overall too long of a read. I wouldn't recommend it.
