皆様ご存じ三大奇書の一角。
どう考えても建物の中が正しく繋がっていない（建物として破綻している）ように思えるのだが、もはやそれすらもこの作品の魔力ゆえでは？と思わされる名作にして怪作。
正直今更読むと、ちと古く感じるんじゃ？と思ったけれど、まったくの杞憂だった。
これを未だにきちんと楽しめる自分にほっとした(笑)

この本は、宗教学や象徴学の知識が細かく出てきていて、少し圧倒されてしまうこともありました。
普通の小説を読む感じで読み進めていくと読み進めるのが難しいのかなと個人的に感じました。

この本は、宗教学や象徴学の知識が細かく出てきていて、少し圧倒されてしまうこともありました。

この本を評するときに引き合いに出される作品群が、ことごとく、ただただペダンティックなもので、どうも私には、それが理解できません。
この作品は、そういうミステリ的に無意味なものの羅列ではありません。
小栗といえば、常軌を逸した超論理、荒唐無稽な機械的トリック、狭い意味での暗号、何かに意味をこじつける広い意味での暗号（本作では甲冑の位置入れ替えなどが代表的でしょう）、奇妙な死体現象、異常な動機、といったものが特長ですが、この作品を飾り立てているのは、まさにそれらです。
ペダントリをつめこんだ作品について「豊潤で盛り沢山な作品」と評されるたびに、「いや、推理小説的に意味のない要素が百あろうが千あろうが豊潤でも盛り沢山でもないから」と思っていたものですが、この作品は違います。小栗流の異常論理が好きな人にとっては、文字通り、ミステリ的に盛り沢山な作品です。
無論、小栗の異常論理は「は？なに言ってんの？」という人も多いでしょうから、そういう人には、いたずらに無意味な装飾がなされた作品に見えるでしょう。
つまり、この作品が読者を選ぶというのは、別に難解だから賢い人しか読めないとか、晦渋だとかいう話ではなく、たとえば「ＳＦミステリのような特殊論理作品を面白がれるか」というのと同じで、単なる好みの問題なのです。そういう意味では、ヴァン・ダインやエーコや笠井潔などと比較されるのは見当違いな気がする。「僕は、こういう衒学的なものも面白いよ。君は違うの？」と無理に楽しんでるふりをする、というものではなく、正真正銘の娯楽作品です。
勿論、小栗流推理が面白いと思えるか、という前提があります。「完全犯罪」などから始めてみて、「こんな推理、聞いたことない！面白い！」と感じたなら、本書はおもちゃ箱です。品のないたとえになりますが、特殊性癖のポルノに興奮できなかったとしても、それは難解だからでも、ポルノ以外の要素で埋まってるからでもありません。性癖が合わないだけなのです。

なお、個々の要素について言うならば、途中までは「後光殺人事件」「失楽園殺人事件」などに比べると小粒ではあります。悪く言えば量で質をカバーしているといえるかもしれません。それでも満腹ですが、最後に明かされるグレーテ殺しの推理に至って質でもトップクラスとなります。超論理、本当か判らない医学と死体現象、荒唐無稽なりに有機的に複数のトリックと効果が絡まりあって妙に精緻なところなど、まさに小栗。これによって、量・質とも、本作は小栗流推理を描いたものとしての最高傑作になっています。

読みながら感じる「？」が多すぎて途中で断念。
読まない本は捨てる主義だが、『黒死館殺人事件』は取っておこう。
モノとして持っておきたい本、というのもある（カバーデザインもいいし）。
