Cyberpunk

Fast pace cyberpunk by Neal Stephenson. Overall good paperback but page quality can be improved slightly, but nice book.

Not my fav.

I read this for a SF book club I'm in. It's my third cyberpunk novel, and I have to say I'm really not in to this genre. Though this one had some interesting themes, it left me wondering where's the closure. I'm still not sure the protagonist accomplished what he set out to do, or even if he had an outcome in mind.

One of the best books ever

I've read Snow Crash probably a dozen times. I've assigned it in a class I taught so I've re-read it whenever my students were also reading it so it would be fresh in my mind. I have no regrets about reading it so many times... it has been enjoyable each time. I am now reading Neal Stephenson's SevenEves; he is a wonderful writer and really gets you thinking.

Great cyberpunk fiction

It hits an excellent balance between having an intresting mystery while still keeping the plot coherent and backs it up with solid characters, a good sense of humour, great writing style and some really solid action.

Good cyberpunk and snark

There is an enjoyable campiness to this book. It feels like a world made from exaggerated sarcasm and microchips. The ending got a little muddled but it was an otherwise fun book.

**NOT ABOUT THE WRITING!!**

This review is not about the actual story / writing but about the shocking quality of the book. The book cover itself feels like the inside of the book and feels horrible to hold, and also the printing looks really cheap and text looks smudged.

Wish I'd of got the kindle version

A book to make you think

I first read this book back on mid '90's. On the reread (thanks Kindle) I was pretty surprised how well the technology had aged over the 25 years or so, as many near future books with cutting edge technology look dated. Snow Crash doesn't, either technology or social/economic settings. I know the basic idea of language and code has been questioned but it works pretty well in the story, the characters are 'larger than life' but pretty believable, and the protagonist Hiro works well. So I liked the book, and want to think/research the language/code thing some more.

Great background but plot is thin

This book established an interesting world and introduces some great characters. The point of the novel is a little lost however. Lots of cool nuggets here, any of which could be made into their own story

Solid overall cyberpunk novel.

Starts off a bit slow before you really see the main story and characters develop. First 60% was tough and then the rest of the boot takes off.

Over-rated Book

Other than the fact that this book introduced -- or at least is said to have introduced -- the concept of the Multiverse, I do not see why this novel is so highly regarded. The first thing that I look for in a novel is a cohesive story but what we have here is a scatter of ideas tied together with too many coincidences and oodles of happenstance. The basic storyline is very, very thin but the author has tried to force fit it to the mythology of Sumeria and he really needs a lot of force to fit it. Not a very intuitive fit. Perhaps smarter than I am can appreciate the delicacy of such a story. Unfortunately, I am unable to do so.

Foundational

This is one of those books that can feel full of cliches, and then you realize that it's a foundational work that all the cyberpunk stories that followed used as a blueprint. Right up there with Neuromancer !

Interesting concept

Without giving too much away I found the core concept of the novel very interesting. Will look into reading more of the authors works.

Enjoyable but maybe I’ve come to it too late

I have heard Snow Crash raved about by people who have read it many years ago.
I didn’t enjoy it as much as Cryptonomicon. I feel perhaps this may be that some of it’s concepts and ways it envisages technology have dated a bit.
I also found the historical components heavy reading.
A worthwhile read all the same.

Interessante e as vezes engaja

O livro é bom e recomendo.
Pode ser um pouco longo e explicar demais as coisas, mas vejo como um aspecto bacana pra narrativa. O autor é ótimo na narrativa, mas as cenas de ação poderiam ser melhor trabalhadas.

Don’t bother, read Neuromancer again instead

Juvenile and now dated. Too many car chases and explosions. Part of plot hinges on vagina dentata yet not at all in an interesting way.

Excellent and Timely (reread)

I first read this book soon after reading a review in Wired magazine. It had held up marvelously. Like all of Neal Stephenson’s books, I learned quite a bit about esoteric history and technology while reading this book. The story is original, and the characters are well-drawn. Definitely a worthy reread.

A Bad and Boring Book

Firstly this is sci-fi and it has dated somewhat, alot of what is seen as the future has come to pass now to some level.
The story itself is utter trash and the book is overly padded with pointless chapters. The whole book could easily be edited to be half its length.
