A primer for many popular science fiction movies of the last two decades and modern Internet ideas.

No long review here, just a simple piece of advice; If you love Douglas Adams' work you will love this too. It is now in my top 5 favorite books of all time.

There are few authors who can inspire their audience to critically think. Stephenson explores so many concepts that forces his reader to think. This is the kind of art that is as infectious as the virus he writes about.

This book was both exciting and interesting. It was a relief to read sci-fi that didn't set up a sequel for a change. I found Stephenson's writing to be exceptional, and was hooked for the majority of the story. Some interesting insights into historical religion as well as potential futures of computer science (although it is funny how many of the things in the book feel extremely obsolete or dated, while others seem impossibly far-off).

I am used to reading space-based sci-fi, but this was definitely a great read. I may even look into reading some of Stephenson's other work in hopes of finding some more one-volume, non-space sci-fi.

Good cult classic

Definitely the best opening chapter of any novel ever. Such fun. The language is great and the story an exciting adventure. Two well drawn main characters.You don't have to like Sci-fi to enjoy it.

I think this book will be considered a classic one day! A perfect blend of technology,humanity,and insanity.One of my favorite writers at his best!

A fun story, it does drag a bit at times.

It was a cool idea but I was never really compelled by the story. The characters just weren't that relatable.

A cyberpunk classic. Good variety, well written. Reads quickly.

I just finished reading the book, my first in the cyberpunk genre, and I don't think that it's especially good. The background on Sumerian mythology gives the book a mystical dimension, but unfortunately, the narrative later undermines the mystical aspects by explicitly subsuming the mystical in the material. For a much better and more original effort in the same vein, try Philip K. Dick's divine trilogy, "VALIS," "The Divine Invasion," and the "The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch." Unlike Stephenson's writing, which seems stiff and conventional, Dick, especially in "VALIS," gives his books a highly inventive, proto-hypertext structure interleaving excerpts from a treatise with the book's narrative and breaking the abstract barrier between the narrative and reality when he includes himself as a character in the story.

I'm not going to give up on the cyberpunk genre. I figure that I'll read "Neuromancer" next.

Great book,really enjoyable

While the book is a fun read and incredibly prescient related to tech...it's a bit of a rambler on unrelated or poorly connected tangents and plot points. If you can suspend belief and ignore historical fact, you're in for a good ride.

This book is somewhat a hacker cult classic. Through metaphor, Stephenson describes a what-if future of social media turned to immersive virtual reality and the emergence of cyber threats that migrate from the virtual to the physical. Here, virtual becomes perfected while the real world becomes a true dystopia. Living in a storage shed is acceptable as long as there's a wonderful virtual escape.

Another great read from Neal Stephenson.

though I should have read it maybe a decade ago, it still manages to hold your attention. More mature readers might find the language slightly off-putting.

Not sure if Neal Stephenson is just not my cup of tea or what, but I never really got into the book. I do like his ability to craft an interesting sentence, but I just couldn't get into the world he created. Maybe I was spoiled because I read a more current book that was based in a VR world... not going to mention the book because that to me is in bad taste... in any case, it isn't a bad read it just didn't grip me like I thought it would from the reviews.
