Interesting concept, not really made for me

Being 23 years of age I'm presumably a few years older than the target group for this book. It's a bit too fast-forward and rough around the edges for me.
The book contains a light story made complex primarily by the authors style. The historcal, religious and sociological background give it some depth though, making it worth the read for me despite several weak points.

Wow...what a ride!

Incredible story. In the real world or the Metaverse...keep it straight as they interact. High speed fun.

Way ahead of it's time...

... more accurate and prophetic than Sci-fi written 20 years later. Should make an excellent film.

I love the imagination

I love the imagination, the light hearted atmosphere, and the endless procession of fun situations and concepts. It's delightfully rich and realized. However, the pseudo-science philosophical mysticism that makes up a chunk of the middle of the book is unbearable, and the endless "binary code hurr durr" stuff is pure face palm, at least in 2016. Still, the good parts (which is most of the book) as so good that it's still an incredibly enjoyable read.

Cyberpunk with a sense of humor

A pessimistic view of the future where people split time between a VR metaverse and a world where corporations and other organizations have formed their own independent mini-nations.

The protagonist spends time in both worlds on an adventure that involves pizza delivery, couriers, hacking, Sumerian culture, ww2 history, and more.

Good read

Great story that went into the weeds a bit from time to time. Still enjoyed it thoroughly though.

Amazon Kindle app won't let me out

Amazon Kindle app won't let me finish this book without giving it a rating. So mr. Stevenson, please ask Amazon to fix their app. Good book, lousy company. This needs to be fixed.

Philosophy, cyberpunk, and alternate reality all woven into one.

This was my first Neal Stephenson book. I picked it up after hearing about it on the Tim Ferriss podcast. It was a good read overall, but the dialogue was a little sophomoric.

I think the virtual reality, cyberpunk, and dystopian corporate future themes were well thought out, but the interpretation of Babel and the separation of languages was a little too out there for me.

If you are looking for a Neal Stephenson book to read, I recommend you skip this and go straight to Seveneves unless you are really into cyberpunk and virtual reality.

Well done!

My own brief studies of ancient near eastern languages made me hesitant to pick this book up. Would it be a mockery of scholastic critical thinking, or even worse an ignorant and crude attempt to portray it? It is neither. Stephenson hits the nail right on the head with so many subjects it's astonishing. All that and still one laugh out loud sentence per chapter. Fantastic read.

Interesting.

Not bad. Lots of good ideas. Bit hard to read in places. Worth reading just for the wild ideas. M'kay

but I hate the writing style

I know this is a classic, but I hate the writing style. I read Stephenson's Command Line book and loved it, but this never developed for me. I read the first half and set it down.

Xtreme 90s storytelling

Xtreme and juvenile story telling that hasn't aged well. Some prescient uses of VR and gaming technology that go on the be prophetic. Just not a very good story wrapped around it.

Great ride

Dystopic but fun to imagine. And with enough action, complexity and humor to stay in the saddle. Worth the read.

Great imaginative book

Thinking that he wrote this well before second life is a fear unto itself. However the story and plot are also great.

... this years ago when it first was published and loved it then

I read this years ago when it first was published and loved it then. Bought it again and enjoyed it just as much. I do recommend this to my friends if they like sci-fi or express an interest in the cyberpunk genre and consider his writing to be better than Gibson's.

Coins the term "avatar", depicts the horror of anarcho-capitalism

I first read this in 2016, somehow missing out for nearly 25 years. Reading it after playing World of Warcraft and countless other MMORPG games, it's mind blowing to realize it was written before those existed. Stephenson foresaw them and whipped up a ripping yarn (to fix a phetamor). The ancient Sumerian mysticism goes over the top, imho, but for the most part Snow Crash astounds with its prescience. It's one of those rare books that manages to be thought-provoking and page-turning at the same time. It showed up on Samuel Goldman's 2013 list of "10 Sci Fi and Fantasy Works Every Conservative Should Read" for its convincing depiction of the horror that is anarcho-capitalism. For what that's worth.

A long read but worth it

A interesting plot weaving memetics, religion, linguistics and futurism. A long read but worth it. Very well researched as is Cryptonomicon.
