Here we have a series of really disjointed characters that are too cool for rules so— you know, they talk hipsters, maintain appropriate emotional distance and are completely unaffected by mundane human realities like happiness or sadness or anything that would otherwise create a pleasant protagonist.

In all this sci fi book is painful since none of the rules dictating the world are apt to apply when the author needs to forward a plot point. No main character is ever in danger so suspense is absent. No character ever learns anything so purpose is absent.

Not worth reading unless you’re desperate.

Fantastically creative sci-fi with some of the most memorable paragraphs I've read all year.

Liked the book a lot based on the historical references to Babel and Sumer. Like any books that can tie in historical fact and spinbit in a new way. Fun read. Would recommend.

This makes for a decent read, but requires a degree of forgiveness. The 'virtual world' theme seems to be in vogue right now and thankfully this story doesn't lean on it as heavily as some. The plot can be a little scrappy and loose in places, but there are also some genuinely wonderful moments of joy and humour.

absolutely awesome worldbuilding and near-future tech, finished it in 3 days i just couldnt stop reading it. Also lots of humor, including the main character being named hiro protagonist.

My favorite cyberpunk book. If you enjoyed neuromancer or want a hero that is a pizza delivery, swordsman, hacker this is the book for you.

Clever, fast moving, worth reading

With how old the book is (published in 1992), it’s amazing that Neil Stephenson was able to coin so many amazing terms that are common place today (he literally made up avatar What?!).

While the writing wasn’t his best the story was enjoyable, I’d recommend reading it.

I did not like the book at first.
Then half way through the book, I could not put it down. I was reading anytime and everywhere.
I love the concept.
I wish the ending gave us what each of the characters did after saving the world.

What seems as a futuristic disjointed story rapidly comes together into a coherent storyline with links to the beginning of humankind, leaving you hooked and unable to put it down. Stephenson has crafted an exciting action thriller in the middle of a sci fi setting with just the right amounts of character development.

When someone recommends a book by the pool at a Cabo resort, I tend to believe and read. It was a good decision again. Some of the book was a bit kitschy, like the name of one character Hiro Protagonist. Guess what his role in the book was. That being said it was entertaining.

Crazy cyberpunk at its best. And I mean crazy

I thought the world building of this novel was incredible. The story was fun and the way Neal Stephenson lays out the mystery makes you want to keep reading. In the end the story wraps up so quickly it almost makes you wish there was more.

This is a great book. I enjoyed it the first time and will end up reading it again. Neal Stephenson is one of the best authors out there.

A must read for fans of anything cyberpunk. If you like the well fleshed out and ponderous nature of Blade Runner, or the literature of Philip K. Dick, this is likely for you.
