Yes, in spite of the reviews quoted in the cover. The Testament is not even close to the best of Grisham. If you are new to Grisham, stop, go and read The Firm, The Client, or Pelican Brief. Do not let this book to prejudice you!Grisham has made a bold attempt to break away from the legal world he was covering so vividly in his previous books. It is reasonable enough for any author to try it some time sooner or later. But, here he has not succeeded. Having said the bad stuff, The Testament is not a bad work. It is interesting and well written book. A unique story. And the religious stuff in the book does not appeal me much. (But it may, some others - so this is a very personal view). Though it is not the job of the reviewer to judge the moral aspects of a fiction, still reading about the ‘white’ characters of missionaries in this book, I am compelled to make a single comment: “Why don’t they think for a moment that there may be other good things in this wide world except their religion. And try to spoon feed that unnecessary luxury to innocent, poor people, while there are thousands of other basic things that one can do to improve their standard of living.”

遺産の金額があまりに多すぎて非現実的だったが、最初はとにかくおもしろい。子供たちを除いては。アマゾンの描写は自己体験のエコツーリストからきているのでしょうか？私には理解できませんでしたが、中年版自分探しの旅っぽくてちょっと残念でした。

前半はストーリーの展開も早くさすが！！という感じでしたが後半、特にラストは期待はずれでがっかりでした。 いつもの読者を飽きさせない魅力が無かったような気がします。　初めてJohn Grishamの作品を読む方には　The Firmなど他の作品から読むことをおすすめします。

遺言書に謎の相続人を指名して自殺した大金持ち。その相続人を求めて、わずかな手がかりをもとに南米の奥地を命がけで探す主人公。この作品の前半は、テンポも速くスリル満点の冒険小説と言える。ところが、途中から中だるみで話がだれてしまい、最後はまるで締め切りに追われるかのように、唐突とも思われる結末にもっていってしまう。前半に大きな山場があるのに、後半にはそれに匹敵する部分がなく、物足りなさが残る。Grishamの前々作Partnerも、前半が面白い割に、後半が退屈で、最後は唐突な終わり方をするという点で一致している。FirmやPelican Briefのように最初から最後まで読者を楽しませてくれる作品はもうGrishamには書けないのだろうか。英語は平易で大変読みやすく、速読の練習にはもってこいだが。
