Great setting, well-thought-out premise

Great setting, well-thought-out premise, it just wasn't about the characters so much as what was unfolding around the characters. The world and plot were the characters.

Still Stephenson's best work IMO

Still Stephenson's best work IMO. Probably because it is a more approachable book being that it is not 10million pages long and due to the fact that it ends at a high point. A lot of his other works give you to much, they build and build and build and then the last arc lets you down, but I still recommend them to people who ask haha.

Needs a sequel. Deserves a movie

My headline is a summary of all I am feeling, having finished an intense ride with Hiro, Y.T., Enzo, Raven and Rife. Too bad Da5id wasn't here to celebrate the smash-up ending. A must-read for all Mafia pizza deliverers, techno-babbling gargoying Kourier hackers, and their friends. Second Lifers should read it like Genisis.

An enjoyable classic

Don't be put off by this being deemed a sci fi classic. It's very readable and enjoyable with great characters and exciting action. The author creates a vivid picture of the future. Considering it was written in the early 90s, I believe, it is a remarkable vision of the near future.

23 years later

I read this after finishing Stephenson's "Diamond Age" and being sent into an insatiable craze for additional material. Even though the book covers material and fields that were in their infancy at the time of writing and said materials and fields have developed substantially in the time between my reading and Stephenson's writing of the book, I still found the book refreshing without seeming dated.

Old favorite

Of all the Neal Stephenson books I've read, this is my go-to when it comes to sharing with others or reading again for the heck of it. Fast paced adventure and suspense melded with some history and anthropology (my favorite). It's a wild ride that might actually teach you something new, and I like that in novels. It's what makes them... novel.

Entertaining and wild

A creative view of the future which hits close to the mark on many levels, pizza delivery, religion, and chaos theory. Stephenson writes with enough detail to visualize his world and is able to keep the story fast paced.

Loved this

Another dark yet fun look at what our future may hold.
The seeds of much of Neal's vision are around us now..a very believable , ingenious and scary future world.
Great adventure, loved the characters. That said I loved the "bad guy" the least....he didn't work for me.

Not a perfect book, but a FANTASTIC cyber punk read

Lots of archane bits about ancient history, woven into a modern cyber-punk conspiracy theory. The protagonist is not as deep as similar novels (vis. William Gibson), but the overall story is unique and well thought out. The writing is TOP notch, and ironically, the supporting characters are awesome.
The book was published in 1992, and absolutely DRIPS with late 80's early 90's tech and imagery of future-tech.

Bottom line, despite its age and shortcomings, it's a fantastic read. A MUST read for sci fi and cyber punk fans.
