| “Dan Rhodes, the thoughtful, hard-working sheriff of Blacklin County, Texas, has enough to worry about already: a rash of burglaries in town and an election coming up against a hot-shot opponent. Now he's got to find a killer among the residents of his little town—a wily killer, bound and determined not to be caught.” Rhodes is a dedicated lawman, with a warm, human side, and a strong belief in justice. He doesn’t really like or understand technology. He uses his wits and people skills to solve crimes. “He was a man wo believed in his instincts. He liked to talk to people, listen to their stories, size them up. If they had anything to hide, he could usually find it out. But physical evidence didn’t hurt anything when it was available.” The characters are all well-developed, and the Texas settings well-described. There is a nice balance of mystery, day-to-day life, and light touches of romance. This was a re-read for me, but I read it so long ago, in paperback, it was almost like new. I love this series. It reminds me of Craig Johnson’s Walt Longmire, but with more humor. This was an entertaining, soothing read with a good ending. I will definitely read (or re-read) the rest of the series. | ||||

| Good easy read. Good characters and, like I said a good, a good whodunit. Bill Crider will have you getting hungry when his characters go to a restaurant, as he always does. Pick it up and check it out, you won't regret it. | ||||

| These stories are funny and low key. I listen to them. They are narrated by George Guidall who also narrates the Walt Longmire series. This was slightly confusing at first, but I adapted. | ||||

| I decided to read Bill Crider after he got a lifetime achievement award. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. What a great writer. The pacing was perfect, the characters were excellent, and the mystery was interesting. Great read. | ||||

| Bill Crider's Dan Rhodes mystery series is one that I've been meaning to get around to reading for a long time. Many of you know how it goes. But a recent recommendation nudged me in the right direction, and I picked up this first book in the series. I enjoyed Crider's gentle sense of humor throughout the book. Whenever Sheriff Dan Rhodes has to tell someone something he (or she) doesn't want to hear, the first thought through his mind is, "Well, there goes another vote." Rhodes is a genuinely nice guy who's fairly well acquainted with all the folks in his county. Speaking of those folks, Crider's provided his sheriff with a good supporting cast, including his daughter Kathy, Mrs. Wilkie (who has the hots for this widowed lawman), and Ivy, a strong, intelligent woman who's running for justice of the peace. The only problem is, he doesn't always make use of that supporting cast. He likes to ponder a case, and when he thinks he may have all the puzzle pieces in the proper places, he runs off to check it out all by his lonesome. I can see times where that's not going to be such a good idea. With a main character who has an independent turn of mind, it's a good thing Bill Crider has a lot of talent when it comes to adding elements of surprise and writing action sequences. I can see that this is a series that I'm probably going to enjoy a lot. I may even wind up adding Dan Rhodes to my list of favorite fictional sheriffs. | ||||

| My first book by this author and it was immediately likable. All the technology used today and this is good old fashioned Andy Taylor sheriffin'. Sheriff Dan Rhodes is up for reelection and people are getting killed. Investigating the crimes doesn't win him any votes. He follows the evidence and his instincts and nearly gets killed himself. Very enjoyable read! | ||||

| I have read all four of Bill Crider's Dan Rhodes Mystery novels. As an avid reader, if I really like the first one in the series, I end up reading them all in order. I can see why Bill Crider has received awards for his work. | ||||

| Modernish TX mysteries are not my usual read at all. But Bill Crider has created complex and fascinating characters, done so with excellent prose, and presented intriguing mysteries. He has scord with all three elements of the best in mystery writing. Not fancy at all, but the dialogue flows and delights. He is funny but never mean. I couldn't put the book down and now have others on my e-reader. A not-to-be-missed portrayal of a small town without stereotypes plus intriguing crimes. | ||||

| I've read many of Crider's books and series. The local public library doesn't typically have his earlier works. I'm pleased to have the opportunity to see the beginning of his series and his characters. For the reader, I can testify that there is change in the series but it remains based in its environment. | ||||
