I should have read this book first (but could not find a good priced one) because it explained 'terms' that I didn't know what they were that are used in later books. GOOD READS I continue to buy MORE Sheriff Dan Rhodesnovels

I've read many of Crider's books and series. The local public library doesn't typically have his earlier works. I'm pleased to have the opportunity to see the beginning of his series and his characters. For the reader, I can testify that there is change in the series but it remains based in its environment.

With a cast if interesting characters and a well-described setting, I was right there with those good old boys. Never guessed the ending.

I like these types of light detective books. I'm late to the game and starting with the first book. It wasn't that riveting or funny, but others claim they get better. I'm willing to give it another try.

I enjoyed this book very much. I have enjoyed all books I have read by Bill Crider. They are humorous but serious as well. I still have a lot of books to read by this author and I am looking forward to this very much. Also, things progress with the characters from book to book. I am glad I discovered this author.

I've been wanting to read some of Bill Crider's books for some time. I decided to begin with the Dan Rhodes series. I was not disappointed! We are so use to modern crime solving technologies depicted in big cities on television. It is refreshing to read this mystery of crime in a rural area. I felt like I knew the characters and enjoyed the setting. The mystery took several unexpected twists and kept me guessing. I can hardly wait to read #2!

I thought I liked Dan Rhodes better than I did in this book. There was more violence, less humor than I remembered. Have to read another one. Perhaps he moved away from the violence later. I get tired of men who break five ribs, get kicked and beaten up and keep on going. I broke two ribs once and every breath hurt for weeks. No way do I believe one could go on fighting. Also don't quite believe in chasing after armed desperadoes with no guns of your own and after being beaten. Stupid.

Bill Crider and Milton T. Burton write readable Texas fiction with settings and characters that ring true to me. I don't know what I'll do when I run out of books like this to read. When I dream of being a writer, it's books like this that I dream of writing.

I found this book to be tedious and limited in its scope. Too much of the same: the characters and the settings really don't seem to stand out from each other, and the plot is slow. I know Bill Crider's books are very popular, so I will try another . . . eventually.

This is the first entry in the successful, long running Sheriff Dan Rhodes series. Rhodes's character is fully formed. He is laid back, sardonic and unambitous. Nevertheless, he wants to keep his job as sheriff and is facing a serious electoral challenge. His job is not made easier when a local woman is beaten to death. Was she perhaps a bit too friendly with too many men? Rhodes needs to solve this mystery fast. The plot and resolution are intended to be ingenious and thought providing. Unfortunately, the author fails on both counts and the solution seems contrived and implausible. Still, this is an entertaining book, although not nearly as good as some of the subsequent books in the series.

Bill Crider is a delightful writer. His Sheriff Dan Rhodes mysteries are very nimbly written. His characters are endearing yet complex. The stories sort of lope along at a pleasant pace.

Author Bill Crider creates his novel with humor and curiosity. These two qualities sure make a great read! Thanks, Bill! You were my favorite English Proffesor!

I read several Dan Rhodes mysteries some years back and was pleased to find this, the first book in the series. Dan is a likable no-frills blue collar sort of lawman and there are many other interesting characters as well. The plot is solid and the story flows nicely while binding in the right amount of west Texas setting. Overall, an enjoyable, easy read.
