Excellent, approaching five star.

The second Anthony Price book I've read and this is as good or better than Other Paths to Glory.
The writing and plotting excellent, characters very interesting and as in OPTG Price has skilfully linked history, in this case WW2 ,to what could easily be the present. In covid times it has been wonderful to find Price's books which could hardly have been better written by Le Carre, Forsyte, Samsom, or Charles Cumming. I shall be reading more

Good solid thriller

Has an old fashioned feel, especially when writing about the main female character, but the plot holds it together.

Entertaining espionage

Realistic, authentic and entertaining! This reader really enjoyed the romantic interlude in the story too. Perhaps, not his best work, but still a very good read. Even though it was written some fifty years, it gave you a solid sense of the time back then before satellite imagery, high tech weapons, spyware, satellite phones and drone warfare. It was good to read the first story written by the author to see where it all began. Price clearly shows he was the master of the obtuse. Read on my Kindle for the bargain price of $3! Recommended! This reader was sorry to hear of his passing.

Good book, worth reading

This is the first book by this author, published about 1970. Not as complex or as intellectual as Le Carre, but very readable and enjoyable. I read it on holiday over two days. I bought it because I read about the author in his obituary a couple of weeks ago.

Quite fun

Mildly entertaining. A perfectly reasonable way to spend 5 hours. Nowhere near the Le Carre class but not bad.

Got better as I read more

At first it seemed very similar to the many books now found in this genre but the plot development was more clever in the development through several layers of intrigue and double cross.

Superb!

This is my second encounter with the work of Anthony Price and I don't regret a moment of it. It is enthralling and engrossing. I read it in a day and a half - I just couldn't put it down.
A bomber has been discovered at the bottom of a drained lake. The pilot is still in it, as are a number of boxes... The Russians are interested... From this moment on we are led down a path of investigation and murder. We think we know where we are being led but don't be stupid... this is the Cold War, these are spies, this is politics....
For the life of me I just don't understand why these books are out of print... Price is priceless!

Highly recommended

Excellent beginning to a really great set of books. Beautifully written, this book will keep you enthralled throughout. Well researched and totally believable. Interesting set of characters who slotted into the storyline seamlessly. Really Sorry when I reached the end, and so glad the main characters are developed further in other books.

(Nearly) as fresh as the day it was written.

I feel a little mean taking away a star for the way the main female character is written - it was first published at the start of the 1970s after all - but even by the standards of the time she could have been given more depth and personality.

Apart from that, a great read with an evocative but plausible plot and some believable (male) characters. Best of all, Price can write sentences, which is often not the case in this genre. Although he never tries to be literary, neither does he insult his reader by plodding away in a monotonous, never changing beat. There's a lightness of touch that lifts the writing and keeps it fresh.

I'm so pleased that others have noticed this and kept the books in print. Too many popular writers from the period have sunk without trace like the Dakota in the novel. Will they reemerge one day?

Seldom pure and never simple

The reality of post-war espionage in all its shades of grey is credibly brought to life by Price through the character of his reluctant hero David Audley, more a middle class Harry Palmer than any sort of James Bond. I'll definitely read 'em all.

First class crime and spy novel.

Having not read any Anthony Price for a number of years decided to begin with the first in the series. An excellent book, as good as le Carre and Deighton. Strongly recommended.

Back-room spy gets a life

David Audley is a reluctant field agent (and lover) when a Second World War Dakota reappears in a drained lake in Lincolnshire in the late 1960s. This event attracts spies in a Cold War drama which has a few intriguing twists and turns. The broad mores of the late 1960s come across but the social and political feel of the age is disappointingly thin, particularly given that Price pitches his contribution at the historical and research end of the spy-genre. The Audley-Faith Steerforth relationship is contrived, plot-wise, and is generally embarrassing, though the latter applies to John Le Carré, as well, and I like most of his novels. Having said as much, and added that Audley’s back-story is not especially persuasive, he is an intriguing hero for a spy novel, and there are many sequels, of which I shall try a couple before deciding whether to keep going. I note an earlier reviewer’s advice that “this is the first book in Price's espionage series about British Intelligence's shadowy "Research and Development" department. It pays to read the books in order of publication - they get more complex as you go along”.
