I'm a long-time fan of mysteries, and have every one of JD Robb's "In Death" Eve Dallas series. I've been trying other female cop/PI series, but haven't found anything so far I like better, or even as much, as the Eve Dallas books. This very definitely did not even come close, IMHO.

If you're a Bostonian you'll enjoy the driving into different neighborhoods with their pithy descriptions by the protagonist Carlyle. I personally got tired of the endless series of tailing cabs, nor was I much interested in Ms. Carlyle's depressing personal and romantic life.

The one bright spot was Paolina, Carlyle's assigned Little Sister. She was delightful. But it's a part of Carlyle's life she keeps separate from her work life, so only limited glimpses of Paolina are shown, although the story uses Carlyle's personal commitment to Paolina as a motivation reason for solving not just the murder, but a bigger mystery involving the IRA and the Mafia.

I managed to plow through the story, but none of the characters (save for Paolina) grabbed my interest. Deleting this from my Kindle and not interested at all in any further stories in the series.

First time I've read a Carlotta Carlyle book. Even though I considered Linda Barnes to be a good writer, I don't believe I will read any of the others .

Well written, and good characterisation, but the mystery is a little dull

Wonderful mystery especially if you know Boston. There are many references to neighborhoods and land marl restaurants and other locations that are fun to read about. Carlotta Carlyle is a fun character as a woman detective. She is dating are snarky but still afraid of spiders. She is comfortable with the cab drivers and with the prostitutes on street corners. It will be fun to watch her love life grow and develop.

Weak plot, unattractive characters. I would not recommend this book as I considered it a waste of time. Thank you.

Not as good as the Kinsey Millhone series by Sue Grafton.
Will try the next in the series
