I've found all the Tres Navarre books to be good reads with a couple of minor distractions. First, he'll describe a particular item so minutely that the reader will suspect it will later play an important part in the story....it won't. You'll never hear it mentioned again. Second, the author knows little or nothing about firearms although they often play important parts in the story line. He'll write something about hearing the safety being clicked off on the revolver or about the .357 magnum semi-automatic pistol. (Neither exist except in very rare, custom firearms) These are, however, small distractions and do not deter me from reading and enjoying the entire series.

Not as good as the rest of the Tres Navarre series. Still you need to read it along with the other books in the series

My second Tres Navarre book to read and was not disappointed! Love the wit and humor that Riordan interjects throughout the novel. Really enjoyable! Being a San Antonio native, the local references were spot on and memorable!

First time I have read Rick Riordan's wonderful Tres Navarre series. Plan to read them all!

I read a lot. It is a pleasure to find a series like this that is so enjoyable, with minimal punctuation and grammatical errors, which seem so common these days with ebooks. The main character is well-developed and the other characters are interesting and varied. The pace is good, with lots of twists and turns. I'm sure I will read the whole series and hope for more.

Kept reading, loved the San Antonio and South Texas details which I know well. Too formulaic to give it 4stars but don't stop!

Robert B. Parker wrote with great wit and had a wonderful sense of dialogue which resulted in my reading everything he wrote. Unfortunately, he died. Rick Riordan manages to re-create that kind of Spenseresque sassiness with Tres Navarre. I thoroughly enjoyed the dialogue and the character development. Riordan writes so descriptively, I feel as though I've been to San Antonio and Austin. Tres is very flawed, but very, very entertaining. I had written this regarding the first book in the series and the second book does not disappoint. I laughed so hard at the scene with the parrot and the hard rock (you'll know it when you read it) that I had to stop reading just to get my breath back. I would recommend the series absolutely -- in fact I already have.

Riordan brings the Texas Hill Country to life in living color, while spinning his tales of imagination and adventure. There's nothing better than hanging out in one of my all=time favorite places with one of my all-time favorite authors. More Trad Nevarre please.

Thoroughly enjoyable protagonist with a 3-dimensional life. Vivid sense of place. This book fulfills everything one expects from a PI mystery. Riordan immerses the reader in the country music culture and the atmosphere of south Texas. I was sucked in immediately and kept engrossed till the end by the complex plot and vivid characters. (I especially loved Jem and Robert Johnson.) Riordan's knack for off-the-wall but apt analogies shines just as much here as in his Percy Jackson series.

The problem is, Tres is just not particularly likable. And it's really difficult to get into a book (or a whole series) when one doesn't particularly care about the main character. Sure, he's probably a decent guy, but so what? And the main subordinate character, a country music singer, I found equally uninspiring. She was clearly manipulating everyone around her, while maintaining her "poor innocent me" act. In fact, except for Ralph, Tres' long-time friend who owns pawn shops in the San Antonio area, pretty much everyone in the book is dishonest with the others - including their friends. Ralph may be heavily armed, and a tough guy in the area, but he's the only honest one. The author's descriptions of the people and places in the book are compelling! The reader is transported to the location, and can practically taste the smoke in the air, and smell the crowd of bar patrons. The narrator in the audiobook version is terrific - every character has a unique and recognizable voice. There's a reason the author won awards for the book. No kidding, it's well done. And maybe the fact that his main character is so flawed is part of the whole "well written" thing. But the character makes it harder to enjoy the book.

I'm a native Texan and appreciate the attention to detail with locations and descriptions of local people. Makes me feel at home. The Tres Navarre character is likable with just the right amount of complexity. All the characters are well developed and fit with the story narrative. It all creates a smooth reading story that holds interest.

If you live in San Antonio, the Tres Navarre books are a blast to read. Tres has just the right combo of intelligence, sarcasm, wickedness and charm with a generous sprinkling of humbleness and Tai Chi thrown in.
